Results from the 2017 Francophone Games

The Francophone Games wrapped up this past week in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.  Quebec athletes from the Montreal YMHA were in full force representing Team Quebec and Canada and the results were quite good.

On Day 1 of the competiion, In the Womens Division Laurence Beauregard wrestling at the 55 kgs division won Gold by defeating her opponents from Benin and Romania while in the Mens Division, Vincent De Marinnis beat his opponent Dillon Williams from Canada en-route to securing a Silver Medal at 65 kgs.  Rounding out the results for Day 1 Guseyn Ruslandzada finished off with a Bronze Medal in the 74 kgs Mens Division with a victory against Burkina Faso.  Trevor Banks wrestling at 57 kgs lost his first match to the eventual Bronze Medalist from Romania.

Gold Medal Finals from Day 1

Day 2 of the competition featured Linda Morais wrestling at the 63 kgs Womens category.  After a dominant win over her opponent from Romania, Linda would lose a hard fought contest to her Canadian adversary 10-10 in the Gold Medal final to win a Silver Medal.

Medal Rounds from Day 2

The last day of the competition featured Amanda Savard (69 kgs) and Veronica Keefe (75 kgs) wrestling in the Womens division and Sam Barmish (86 kgs), Jeremy Poirier (100 kgs), Frederique Choquette (125 kgs) and Jordan Steen wrestling for Team Canada at 86 kgs.  After a tough day of competition, Jordan Steen emerged with a convincing 10-3 win over Armenia to claim the Gold Medal for Team Canada while Veronica Keefe would also capture a Gold medal with a Technical fall (10-0) against Cameroon.  In 125 kgs division, Federique Choquette just came up short against his Canadian opponent losing 2-1 in the Gold medal final to win a Silver Medal.

While Team Quebec equalled its total from the last Francophone Games, the Gold Medal count was two more.  Congratulations to all our Quebec athletes for their fantastic results!
