The 2017 Senior World Championships took place for Men and Women in Paris France on August 21st to the 26th.  Quebec was well represented with Jordan Steen wrestling at 86 kgs, Linda Morais at 60 kgs and Thomas Barreiro at 98 kgs Greco-Roman.  Coach David Zilberman was also there to represent Quebec and the Montreal YMHA.  The World Championships had an interesting narrative as Jordan Steen looked to bring his momentum from his win at the Francophone Games while Linda Morais was hoping to continue her success from last year's World Championships in which she captured a Bronze Medal, also at 60 kgs.  Finally, Thomas Barreiro was looking to wrestle well in his first Senior World Championships.

The competition would start off with Thomas Barreiro from the Tristar Wrestling Academy competing against Choucri Atafi from Morroco.  Thomas would lose a hard fought match by a score of 4-1 and  would not advance in the competition.

The next Quebec wrestler to take to the mat was Linda Morais from the Montreal YMHA.  Linda would start off her day wrestling against Aurelie Basset from the host country France with a convincing win via Technical Fall (10-0).  Linda's next match would be against Hyeonju Kwon of the Republic of Korea to which she would also put in another convincing win by Technical Fall (15-4).  Linda's next challenge would have her face Olympic Champion Risako Kawai from Japan in the quarter-finals. Linda would put up decent match before succumbing to defeat via Technical Fall (10-0).  Linda would now head to the repechage, drawing a formidable opponent from Mongolia, Shoovdor Baatarjav.  After a back and forth match, Linda would lose via fall with the score being 11-8.  Linda would finish a respectable 7th place overall.

The last Quebec wrestler to compete on Friday August 25th, was Jordan Steen also from the Montreal YMHA.  Jordan's first match would be against Davit Khutsishvili from Georgia.  Jordan would wrestle well, conceding only two points in the first half but ultimately would lose via decision by a score of 6-0 and would not advance in the competiton.

The World Championships is the toughest tournament for Senior Wrestlers, maybe even tougher than the Olympics.  Though the results weren't what was hoped for, our Quebec athletes should be congratulated to making it to this elite level.
