FILA Rule Changes

Facebook Twitter

In an effort to make the sport of wrestling more accessible to the average viewer, FILA has decided to change the rules yet again.  This time however I think they got it right.  First though, a little bit of background information.  I retired shortly before the last rule change so as a result,  I never experienced the three rounds of two minutes nor the "last person that scores wins" rule (though I'm actually not all that against that one).  I have however coached athletes for many years within that format.  I'm just going to state that I like this new rules that will be implemented shortly.

For those of you who aren't current on the rules change, here are they are:

  1. Three rounds of two minutes now become two rounds of three minutes.  The match is cumulative in that the score will transfer from the first to the second round.  a 10 point superiority is now in place.  Also, the 30 seconds between rounds is still in place.
  2. The "Push out" rule has been modified to state that the wrestler must be engaged in a technique for a point to be awarded instead of just trying to push them out without wrestling.
  3. The implantation of a "Shot Clock".  If no wrestler has scored after 30 seconds, a clinch will be awarded to the wrestler who was the least passive (some might argue that this too judgmental but this is how it was before, deal with it ).
  4. Two points will be awarded for a Takedown without exposure or for a control point.

This last one I believe has the potential to change wrestling as a takedown has always been worth only 1 point.  Furthermore, I also think that the these new rules will encourage wrestlers to wrestle rather than stalling to the end and trying to "steal matches" as one might say.

As coaches, fans, and athletes we must adapt to these new rules.  And maybe, because I wrestled within this era, I think that this is a change for the positive and hopefully will make our sport less obscure for the casual fan.
