February 2015

February is the showcase month for the province of Quebec.  This month sees three events which are the highlight of the High School wrestling season.  On Tuesday February the 4th 2015, High Schools in the GMAA came together to compete in All Star Meet which saw the best in the league compete against the All Stars of Beurling Academy, the defending champions for the boys and for the girls, an interesting REDS vs BLUES matchup.

The All Star Meet was won by a close score of 2000 to 1999 for Beurling, showcasing the talent on both sides.  The Girls All-Star Meet was also a closely contested affair between the REDS and BLUES with the BLUES taking the match by the score of 1000 to 999.  A special commendation goes out to Beurling who did a great job in hosting the event.

The following week saw the GMAA Wrestling Championships take place at Heritage Regional High School in the south shore.  The annual event saw Beurling repeat as champions for a second year in a row, marking the first time that this has happened for a public school in modern GMAA era.

The final event for the month of February was the Provincial Championships held in St-Cesaire by the Club de luttes les Patriotes.  Dominique Choquette and his club once again hosted a great event as the Provincials serves as the first step to qualifying for the Canadian National Championships.

Concordia posted some strong results with Veronica Keefe winning Gold at the 72 kg Womens division and Theres El-Lati placing 5th at 82 kg.  For the men, Trevor Banks wrestling at 54 kg took home a Silver Medal while Vince Demarinis wresting at 65 kg and Dimitry Gershanov wrestling at 72 kg captured Bronze Medals.  Bassel Bou Moughlab and Cristian Mandari placed 7th wrestling at 57 kg and 68 kg respectively.  Chris Kinsella rounds out the reuslts for the men placing 8th at 76 kg.
