The month of May was a quiet one.  With only two tournaments that Quebec athletes competed, Quebec athletes nevertheless took home many individual honours at the Eastern Canadian Championships and the Sassari International Tournament


 

Martine Dugrenier announces retirement


Martine Dugrenier of the Montreal YMHA announced her retirement due to an injury to her shoulder.  Dugrenier is a 6 time World medalist as well as a 3 time World Champion.  Martine placed second at the World Championships from 2005 to 2007 before reeling off 3 consecutive World Championship wins from 2008 to 2010.  Martine is also a two time Olympian, representing Canada at the 2008 and 2012 Games, placing 5th at both events.  She has also served as coach for the Quebec Girls Canada Games teams in 2009 and 2013 as well as coaching the YMHA Kids Program.

Martine Dugrenier defeats Japan in the 2008 Women's World Championships


 

The Canada East Wrestling Championships


The Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships took place in Niagara Falls on May 9-10.  Many young athletes from Quebec competed in this event with some great results from a multitude of clubs.  In the Novice Boys division, Nicolas Lescadre of CLIC won Gold at the 24.8 kgs while from the the Club de Lutte les Patriotes, Mikael Leblanc won Gold in the 26.6 kgs category.  Also from the Club de Lutte les Patriotes, Salomon Lacasse took home a Bronze Medal at the 27.9 kgs while Nathan Rainville (Gold Medal) and Cristobal De La Cortina (Bronze Medal) took the honours at the 29.5 kgs category.  Finally, Benjamin Pare of the  Club de Lutte les Patriotes won Gold in the 36.8 kgs category.  Mathis Rainville from the Club de Lutte les Patriotes rounds out the results in the Kids Division, winning the Gold Medal at the 58.3 kgs category.

 

In the Girl Kids Division, Quebec's sole representative was Laurence Lescadre of CLIC who placed second in the 33.4 kgs division.  In the Boys Kids Division, Illie Dragoman representing the Club de Lutte les Patriotes/YMHA Kids placed 2nd at the 48 kgs category  while David Gauthier took the Bronze medal at the 52.2 kgs division.

 

In the Bantam Girls Division, Jade Weston of the Westwood Crazy Dogs won the Silver Medal at the 82.2 kgs category.  Wenhniseriiostha Goodleaf from KSS took the Silver Medal at the 76.1 kgs category while Stella McComber and Tekanakake Stacey of KSS took Gold and Silver in the 69.6 kgs category.  Michelle Toutant of the Club de Lutte les Patriotes took a Bronze Medal at the 65.9 kgs category while Juliette Martineau-Seguin of the Westwood Crazy Dogs also won a Bronze Medal in the 41.5 kgs category.

 

Finally in the Bantam Boys Division, Christopher Merlo of CLIC and Olivier Pare of the Club de Lutte les Patriotes took Silver and Bronze in the 34.6 kgs category while Nicolae Ganbradura from the Club de Lutte les Patriotes placed 2nd at 39.8 kgs category.  Marius Samson of the Club de Lutte les Patriotes/YMHA Kids won the Gold Medal at the 42.6 kgs category while Samuel Leblanc from the Club de Lutte les Patriotes took the Bronze Medal at the 47.4 kgs category.  Rounding out the results for the Bantam Boys, Ibrahim Gungor of CLIC took a Gold Medal at the 105.4 kgs category.

Sassari International Tournament


The Sassari International Tournament is held on the Island of Sardinia in Italy.  Canada sent a strong contingent of athletes to the tournament, with many Quebec Athletes competing well and winning three medals at the tournament.

 

Veronica Keefe of the Montreal YMHA won a Gold Medal at the Women's 69 kgs division while Jordan Steen, also of the Montreal YMHA won a Bronze Medal at the 86 kgs category Men's Division.  Rounding out the results for the tournament, Ali Rekabi of the Montreal YMHA placed 2nd at 97 kgs.  Congratulations to all Quebec athletes that competed and to all our medal winners!
