On Friday March 18th, the province of Quebec competed in the Canadian Junior Nationals in the Mens and Womens divisions held in Fredericton New Brunswick.  Quebec had some fantastic results from KSS and the Montreal YMHA with many Top Six finishes and medals.

 

KSS had some strong results as Angel Robertson placed 5th in the Womens 67 kgs division while Kanerahtens Bush placed 6th at the Mens 50 kgs division.  Finally, Nolan Terrance, wrestling at 120 kgs took home the Silver Medal in a all Quebec match-up.

From the Montreal YMHA, the results were exceptionally strong as Dylan Mclean wrestling at 55 kgs placed 5th while Karinvir Singh (60 kgs) placed 6th.  At 66 kgs, Quebec took home two medals as Francis Carter won the Bronze Medal while Guseyn Ruslanzada won the Gold Medal in a thrilling final, beating Omar Ahmed from Hamilton.  At 74 kgs, Alex Moore won by Technical Superiority over Chance Mutuku from Brock with a score of 11-0.  For his fine performance, Alex received the Outstanding Male Wrestler Award.  In the 84 kgs division, Sam Barmish won his first national medal, losing a close final by the score of 11-10 to Tejvir Boal from Akhara of Champions.  At 120 kgs, Aly Barghout placed 4th while Frederique Choquette won his first National title by beating Nolan Terrance of KSS by a score of 3-0.

Alex Moore wins the Outsanding Male Wrestler in Junior Mens Division

On the Womens side, Jade Dufour cruized to an easy victory in the 48 kgs Womens division by pinninng Natassya Lu of Guelph to claim her second consecutive Junior National title while Laurence Beauregard also won her first national medal at 55 kgs, losing in the final to Amy Belllavia of the Hamilton Wrestling Club.

As a province, Quebec placed second with 42 points to Ontario's 47 while the Montreal YMHA won the title for the Best Club in Canada by a comfortable margin of 40 points to Burnaby Mountain's 30.

Saturday March 19th, 2016

 

On Saturday, the showcase event took place as the Seniors competed.  Quebec had strong results from CLIC and the Montreal YMHA with many athletes in the Top Six and in the Medals.

 

CLIC's lone representative, Christopher Kinsella emerged with a Bronze medal at the 70 kgs Men after a tough round robin.

The Montreal YMHA put in another strong showing as three women and three men made it to the Gold medal finals.  At the 57 kgs division, Trevor banks placed 6th while at 61 kgs, Gabriel Choueke was 4th while James Mancini beat Joshua Bodnarchuk in closely contested final by the score of 6-4.  At a very competitive 65 kgs division, Scott Schiller placed 5th while Vince De Marinis finished 6th.  At 84 kgs, Jordie Steen survived an early 5-0 onslaught from his opponent from the Black Bears Wrestling Club, Alex Brown-Theriault, coming back to win by a score of 13-5.  For his comeback efforts, as well as his strong wrestling throughout the tournament, Jordie was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the Mens side.  In the 97 kgs division, Ali- Al-Rekabi finished off the tournament strong by beating Kyle Bonk-Dann by pin to win the Bronze Medal.  Rounding out the results, Yakhdan Al-Rekabi lost to Gurjot Kooner from Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club in the Gold Medal final of 125 kgs to take home a Silver Medal

On the Womens side, Laurence Beauregard added to her medal count by winning a Silver medal at the 55 kgs division.  Linda Morais, fresh off her strong performance at the Olympic Trials, easily defeated Krystin Paquette, her opponent from the Black Bears Wrestling Club by pin to win the Gold medal at the Womens 58 kgs division.  Rounding out the results,  Veronica Keefe won the Silver medal, losing in the finals to Olivia Di Stasio of Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club.

As a province, Quebec finished third on the Womens side while the Montreal YMHA placed 2nd as a club (20 points) to the Brock Wrestling Club (22 points).  For the Mens, Quebec lost narrowly to Ontario by a score or 41 points to 38 points while the Montreal YMHA tied Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club with 35 points a piece but placed second on the virtue of having won less Gold medals.

Sunday March 20th, 2016

 

Rounding out the results for the National Championship weekend, Quebec clubs took home two medals as KSS and Tristar Wrestling Academy each had medalists at the Junior Mens division.

 

From KSS, Nolan Terrance beat Chris O'toole from Hampton to win Gold at 120 kgs while John Yeats wrestling at 74 kgs from Tristar Wrestling Beat Aidan Mckeage of the Bears Wrestling Club to also win a Gold medal.  Due to these two fine performances, Quebec was able to finish 2nd with 21 points to Ontario's 24 points.
