Kahnawake Survival School Coach Peter Montour Named Head coach of Team Eastern Door and the North for the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto

On May 5, 2016 Kahnawake Survival School Wrestling coach Peter Montour was named Head Wrestling Coach for Team Eastern Door and the North at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto.  Quebec is not represented at the North American Indigenous Games.  Team Eastern door and the North is made up of the Three Mohawk communities Kahnawake, Akwesasne and Kanesatake (Mohawks Roles within the traditional Iroquois political structure are called the Keepers of the Eastern Door.) and the North or all native communities North of Montreal.

Coach Montour has been a part of the North American indigenous Games since it’s inception as an assistant coach/athlete in the 1990 N.A.I.G in Edmonton Alberta, the 2002 NAIG in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, the 2005 NAIG in St Paul Minnesota, 1997 NAIG in Victoria B.C.  He missed the 2002 NAIG in Winnipeg Manitoba but would return as Head Coach/Athlete in 2006 Colorado, and Head Coach at the 2008 NAIG in Cowichan British Columbia, and 2014 NAIG in Regina Saskatchewan. Coach Montour was a coach at the 2013 Canada Games through the Aboriginal Apprentice Coach Program.

For those interested in representing Team Eastern Door and the North at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games in Toronto must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have proof of aboriginal decent I.E. carry an Aboriginal Affairs Status Card. Or status Number, or an Iroquois Confederacy Birth certificate or Iroquois Confederacy passport.
  • Must normally reside within the territory of Region 6 Eastern Door and the North.
  • Must have a minimum of one year wrestling experience in a recognized Program.
  • Must be a member of the FLOQ
  • Must be born within 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Trials will be held on Saturday November 19, 2016 at the Kahnawake Survival School gymnasium.  The Cost is $10.00 per wrestler.  Anyone interested in trying out for Team Eastern door and the North must contact Coach Montour at pmontour@hotmail.com no later than Wednesday November 16, at 5:00p.m.  For more up to date information on the North American Indigenous Games athletes and their families should check the web Eastern door Web site at www.pen-edn.com.
