Two Incredible Tournaments

The past weekend featured two incredible tournaments for wrestlers in the highschool and cegep level as Bishop Ryan and Matmen played host to two of the best highschool tournaments in the country. On Friday, December the 9th, Montreal YMHA and Vanier college sent wrestlers to the Bishop Ryan Invitational and the competition level did not dissapoint.  Bishop Ryan hosted 300 wrestlers from various clubs from around the country as many clubs come to take part in these two tough competitions that are held back to back.  From the Montreal YMHA on the Boys side, Jason Luneau took a Bronze medal at 51 kgs while Nicolae Gandrabura won Gold at 54 kgs.  At 64 kgs, Natael Lebrun-Cantin also won Bronze while Jaskaran Singh took a Silver medal at 72 kgs.  From Vanier College, Aaron Orszak won a Silver Medal at 77 kgs while Julien Choquette won Gold at 83 kgs.  Jonathan Campagnola would round out the results for the boys by placing 4th at 89 kgs.

On the Girls side,  Montreal YMHA, les Patriotes de St-Cesaire and Vanier College had wrestlers compete with strong results.  From the Montreal YMHA, Alexia Sherland placed 3rd at 76 kgs while Erin Rainville from les Patriotes de St-Cesaire was 4th at 55 kgs.  Finally from Vanier College, Kaya Dube-Snow took the Bronze medal at 59 kgs while Alexandria Campbell won Gold at 71 kgs.

At the Matmen Classic, the tournament was perhaps one of the strongest highschool tournaments in the country as 600 hundreds athletes competed from clubs coming from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and of course Quebec.  The Quebec clubs that competed were CLIC, Montreal YMHA, les Patriotes de St-Cesaire and Vanier College.  The results were the following.

Christopher Merlo

From CLIC, Christopher Merlo won a Gold medal at 38 kgs Cadet Boys while Ayoub Bencherif wrestling at 58 kgs Open Boys won a Silver Medal.

Wrestling for the Montreal YMHA, Jason Luneau placed 2nd at 50 kgs while Nicolae Gandrabura won Gold at 54 kgs.  

Aly Barghout

Finally from Vanier College, Aaron Orzack (76 kgs), Julien Choquette (80 kgs), Aly Barghout (130 kgs), Kaya Dube-Snow (56 kgs) and Alexandria Campbell (70 kgs) would all win Gold medals in their respective divisions.  Jonathan Campagnolo rounds out the results by winning a Silver medal at the 100 kgs division

The Montreal YMHA was able to place second as a team of the the tournament.
