Linda Morais: World Bronze Medallist!

Facebook Twitter

The UWW held a World Championships this year for all the non-Olympic weight classes in all three international styles in Budapest Hungary.  This is the first time that this was done and allowed some of the top wrestlers in the world to compete who did not participate at the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.  Linda Morais of the Montreal YMHA wrestled at the 60 kgs Womens division (up from her usual 58 kgs) and did Canada proud.  Linda would win her qualification match against Derya Bayhan of Turkey (6-0) by pin.  Linda would then lose a tough match to Allison Mackenzi Ragan by a close score of 6-3.  Linda would then be placed in the repechage as Ragan advanced to the semi-finals.  Linda would then beat Laura Mertens of Germany, also by pin to move on to the Bronze medal final.  In the Bronze medal match, Linda faced Ayaulym Kassymova of Kazakhstan.  Linda would defend a leg attack before countering and scoring two.  After scoring par-terre with a crossed-ankle, Linda would take her opponent down and then score again.  Linda would go on to finish the match by a technical fall.  With that dominant performance, Linda becomes Canada's lone medalist from the 2016 World Championships! Congratulations Linda!
