A busy start to the New Year

2018 began with a bang as three tournaments at the high school and university level kicked off the weekend of January 12-14.  Cadet, Juevenile and Junior athletes competed at the Ontario high school tournaments in Etiboke, Thorold and Barrie while Quebec athletes competing for Concordia University competed at the Brock Invitational Wrestling tournament in St-Catherines Ontario.

The first tournament in Etiboke, called the Ragnorok in the Rex featured athletes from Vanier College, Montreal YMHA as well as some athletes competing from out of province with the Montreal YMHA.  Winning Gold medals were Anabelle Boudreau (51 kgs New Brunswick), Jayden Sparks (57.5 kgs Vanier College), Nataël Lebrun-Cantin (67.5 kgs Vanier College), Jaskaran Singh (72 kgs Vanier College) and Julien Choquette (89 kgs Vanier College).  In addition to this, Jayden Sparks was named as the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Winning Silver medals were Erin Rainville (57.5 kgs Vanier College), Jason Luneau (57.5 kgs Montreal YMHA) and Jonathan Campagnolo (130 kgs Vanier College).

Finally, finishing off with Bronze medals from Ragnorok in the Rex were Samuel Rainville (72 kgs Vanier College) and Nolan O’Rourke (61 kgs PEI).

On Friday at the Thorold Invitational, the same athletes from Vanier College, the Montreal YMHA and the out of province athletes also would compete at this tournament as well.  Many Gold medals were won as Anabelle Boudreau (51 kgs New Brunswick), Erin Rainville (57.5 kgs Vanier College), Jason Luneau (57.5 kgs Vanier College), Nolan O’Rourke (61 kgs PEI), Nataël Lebrun Cantin (67.5 kgs Vanier College) and Julien Choquette (89 kgs Vanier College)

The K-Bay Tournament

Saturday would be the busiest day on the schedule as the K-Bay tournament and the Brock Invitational would happen on the same day.  Montreal YMHA, les Patriotes de St-Cesaire, Vanier College and Concordia University would compete in those tournaments with a strong showing.  At the K-Bay tournament, the results were very strong as Annabelle Boudreau (51 kgs New Brunswick), Erin Rainville (57.5 kgs Vanier College), Jason Luneau (57.5 kg Montreal YMHA), Stone Lewis (61 kgs Montreal YMHA), Nataël Lebrun Cantin (67.5 kgs Vanier College), Jaskaran Singh (72 kgs Vanier College) and Julien Choquette (89 kgs Vanier College) all won Gold medals in their respective divisions while Anabelle Boudreau (54 kgs New Brunswick), Nolan O’Rourke (61 kgs Vanier College), Samuel Rainville (72 kgs Vanier College) and Jonathan Campagnolo (130 kgs Vanier College) took home Silver medals.

The first tournament at the University level was the Brock Open held at Brock University in St-Catherines Ontario.  Members of the Concordia Wrestling Team and the Montreal YMHA competed with the following results:

From the Montreal YMHA, Scott Schiller would take Bronze in a tough 68 kgs weight division while Aly Barghout wrestling at 130 kgs would win Gold.  Rounding out the results from the Men's division was Frederique Choquette who would take Silver at 130 kgs.  In the Women's division, Laurence Beauregard from Concordia University would win Bronze at 59 kgs while Alexia Sherland would take the Silver at 67 kgs.  Congratulations to all our Quebec athletes on this busy weekend.
