The Montreal YMHA wins the Senior Women Team Award

Saturday and Sunday marked the end of the Canadian Nationals returning to Quebec for the first time in over twenty years. On Saturday the 17th of March, the Centre Claude Robillard played host to some of the best wrestlers in the country as the Senior Nationals wrapped up. Both CLIC and the Montreal YMHA participated in the tournament and the results were historic as the Senior Men led by the Montreal YMHA placed second as a club, losing the team title by a mere two points to the Brock Wrestling Club to finish second as both a club and as a province. On the Women's side, CLIC and the Montreal YMHA fielded athletes as Quebec finished second again as a province and the Montreal YMHA captured the Women's Team Title for their first time in their history thanks to some impressive individual results.

For the Men, Trevor Banks would wrestle a tough tournament to finish 4th at 57 kgs while Scott Schiller would also come up short at 61 kgs to also finish 4th. At 65 kgs, Vince De Marinis would lose a close match in the Bronze Medal final (9-6) to place 4th while at 70 kgs, Francis Carter would wrestle a back and forth match but win by a score of 9-6 over Cole Michaelis of Guelph to break the jinx and win a Bronze Medal. At 74 kgs, Guseyn Ruslanzada would lose for 5th to Callum McNiece to finish off 6th. At 79 kgs, Sam Barmish would finish in 5th place while Alex Moore would dominate the competition and win via Technical Fall (11-0) over Ajay Gill of the Burnaby Mountain Wresting Club in the final for the Gold Medal. At 92 kgs, Jeremy Poirier would win Bronze while at 97 kgs Jordan Steen would win a closely contested match by a score of 4-1 to win Gold. Rounding out the results for the Men, Aly Barghout would lose in the Bronze Medal final at 125 kgs by score of 6-5 to Bradley Hildenbrandt of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club while Frederique Choquette would place 5th with a Technical Fall win (10-0) over Anthony Parker of the London Western Wrestling Club.

In the Women's division, Jade Dufour would lose a close match (2-1) in the Gold Medal final to take a Silver Medal while at 59 kgs, Laurence Beauregard would win all her matches in the round robin to win Gold. At 62 kgs, Linda Morais would win in a dominant fashion via Technical Fall (10-0) over Breanne Graham of the Dinos Wrestling Club in the finals to win the Gold Medal. At 72 kgs, Veronica Keefe would take an 8-0 lead before winning via Fall to take home Gold over Shauna Kuebeck of the Brock Wrestling Club while Genevieve Lamarche would finish 5th in the same division. Finally, rounding out the results was Gabrielle Hochfelder of CLIC who would lose via Technical Fall (10-0) to Haley Heffel of the Bears Wrestling Club to win Silver.

On the final day of competition, the Greco National Championships closed out the tournament. Quebec's only club in the competition was the Tristar Wrestling Academy. John Yeats (77 kgs Senior) would win by Fall over Brayden Ambo of the London Wrestling Club to win the Gold Medal while Phillip Barreiro (87 kgs) would win all his matches to also win Gold at 87 kgs Senior. Finally, Thomas Barreiro (97 kgs Senior) would win by decision by a score of 3-1 over Calvin Daum of the Brock Wrestling Club to also win Gold. In addition to this, John Yeats would win the Outstanding Wrestler for the Senior competition. Congratulations to all our Quebec wrestlers for their successful weekend!
