Results from the 2018 FISU World Championships

The 2018 World University Championships or FISU took place on September 4-9 in Goiania Brazil. The FISU World Championships features the best university athletes from around the world as they compete in this truly unique international event. Quebec was represented by wrestlers from the Concordia Wrestling team, which is the only Quebec university to compete at the varsity level in the U-Sport orginzation. Vincent De Marinis, Francis Carter, Alex Moore, Jade Dufour, Laurence Beauregard and Linda Morais took to the mats in Brazil with some very good results coming from Brazil.

Wrestling in the 65 kgs, Vincent De Marinis would lose a tough first match to the eventual Gold Medalist from Japan, Kei Yonezawa via Technical Superiority (10-0). Vincent would respond very well in his next match, winning by Technical Superiority (10-0) versus Sinhue Oliva Jimenez of Mexico. Vincent would lose a close match via Criteria (5-5) to Selim Kozan of Turkey to set up his final match for the Bronze Medal. Vincent would win by a comfortable margin by beating Mateusz Nejman from Poland by Technical Superiority (11-0) to win the Bronze Medal.

Alex Moore, wrestling at 86 kgs would also equal his Concordia teammate's results by winning Bronze Medal in spectacular fashion. Alex's first match would be a tough one as he would lose against the eventual Gold medalist from Turkey, Osman Gocen by Technical Superiority (12-2). Alex would rebound in his next match with an impressive Technical Superiority win (10-0) in just twenty five seconds versus Allan Moreira of Brazil. Alex would lose a close match by points (6-0) to Mihály Nagy of Hungary to set up a final match for the Bronze Medal. Alex would finish off his tournament in impressive fashion by beating Andrey Purikhov of Russia by Technical Superiority (11-0) to win Bronze in his first FISU World Championship. Finally, Francis Carter, wrestling at 70 kgs would lose in a tough preliminary round to Patryk Olenczyn of Poland by points (8-2) and would not advance to the repechage.

On the Women's side Jade Dufour wrestling at 50 kgs, would win her first match of the day versus Weronika Sikora of Poland by Fall. In her next match, Jade would once again win by Fall by beating Kika Kagata of Japan. In the Gold medal final, Jade would finish off her tournament with a dominant win by Technical Superiority (12-1) against Muñoz Diaz from Mexico to win the Gold medal. Continuing the strong run for Concordia's women, Laurence Beauregard would also win a Gold medal at 59 kgs versus Beatriz Andrade of Brazil with a quick victory by Fall (three seconds). Finally, to round out the results, Linda Morais wrestling at 62 kgs in her first match of the day would easily defeat Fabbiana Alcantara of Brazil by Technical Superiority (12-0). In her next match, would win in a dominant fashion by Fall versus Katarzyna Madrwoska of Poland. In Linda's final match of the round-robin, Linda would equal her results from the previous FISU Championships and secure the Gold Medal by beating Honoka Imagawa of Japan by Fall to finish her tournament in a dominant fashion.

With those three Gold medal performances in addition to other strong performances by other members of the Canadian Women's team, Canada was able to capture the Team Title in Women's Wrestling! Congratulations to our Concordia athletes on their excellent performances in Brazil. To even make it to a FISU World Championships is an accomplishment and we are very proud of what you have done!
