Results from the 2018 Junior World Championships

Team Canada: Men's Team

The Junior World Championships were held in Trnava, Slovakia from September 17-23. Quebec sent Aly Barghout to the tournament who was a Top Ten finisher (9th) at last year's competition.  Aly, wrestling at 125 kgs and representing the Montreal YMHA, was accompanied by Coach Martine Dugrenier.  Wrestling  for the 125 kg competitors began on Saturday September 22nd.  Aly's first match would have him go up against Samhan Jabrailov from Moldova. After a tense match with attacks coming from both wrestlers, Aly would emerge with the victory via Decision by a score of 4-2.

Aly's next match would have him face off against Yurii Idzinskyi of Ukraine.  Despite going down by a point early on in the match, Aly would also win this match comfortably by Decision (5-1) to move on to the Semi-Final match versus Rahid Hamidli of Azerbajan.

This would prove to be Aly's toughest match of the day.  Aly would take an early lead and but was forced to score late in the match to get the win by Decision with a final score of 3-2.

Aly would face a tough match in the Gold Medal final on the following day versus Soslan Khinchagov of Russia.  Despite putting up a strong effort, Aly would lose the match via Decision by a score of 7-0.  Despite the result, Aly was the only Canadian male to medal at the World Championships and that accomplishment should not be overlooked.  Congratulations Aly on your historic accomplishment!
