A busy weekend to start off the New Year of 2019

The New Year started off with a rush as four tournaments were on schedule as Quebec clubs returned to action.  The Ragnorok on the Rex held on Friday January 11th while Saturday the 12th saw Riverdale Invitational, the K-Bay tournament and the Brock Invitational.  Quebec clubs were all active in these tournaments as Beurling Academy, CLIC, Concordia University, KSS, Massey Vanier, the Montreal YMHA, les Patriotes de St-Cesaire, the Riverdale Wrestling Club and Vanier College sent athletes to all four tournaments.

Ragnorok on the Rex

At the Ragnorok on the Rex held in Etobicoke Ontario, high school athletes were in action as Beurling Academy, CLIC, Heritage Regional High School, the Montreal YMHA and Vanier College sent athletes to the tournament.  The results were the following.

From CLIC, Christopher Merlo (51 kg) and Thomas Rizk (95 kg) both won Gold medals while from Beurling Academy, Sarah Black wrestling at 57.5 kg took a Bronze Medal.  From Heritage Regional High School, Stone Lewis won Gold at 67.5 kg and took home the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.  From the Montreal YMHA, Jason Luneau (61 kg) won Gold while wrestling for Vanier College, Natael Lebrun-Cantin (Silver at 67.5 kg) and Samuel Rainville (Gold at 72 kg) rounded out the results for our Quebec athletes.  On a side note, Vanessa Keefe from the Island Wrestling Academy in PEI, wrestling with athletes from the Montreal YMHA won Gold at 72 kg.

The Riverdale Inviational

The Riverdale Invitational held in Pierrefonds Quebec featured some of the local Quebec clubs sending their high school wrestlers to compete.  While the tournament was smaller than in previous years, wrestlers were still able to get matches and get some valuable experience.  This year's tournament featured clubs from Montreal and St-Cesaire including high school teams such as Selwyn House and Loyola.

The K-Bay tournament

The K-Bay Tournament was also held on Saturday making it back-to-back for our Quebec wrestlers.  Results were once again strong as CLIC, Beurling Academy, Heritage Regional High School, the Montreal YMHA and Vanier College all took part in the competition.

From CLIC, Christopher Merlo won Gold at 51 kg while Thomas Rizk was 2nd at 92 kg.  From Beurling Academy, Sarah Black (57.5 kg) placed 4th while Stone Lewis (Heritage Regional High School) made it two for two by winning Gold at 67.5 kg.  Wrestling for the Montreal YMHA, Jason Luneau won Gold at 61kg while from Vanier College, Nataël Lebrun-Cantin (67.5 kg) took second and Samuel Rainville (72 kg) was first in their respective divisions.  Finally, Vanessa Keefe from the Island Wrestling Academy (72 kg Cadet) finished second while Virginie Clément (83 kg Open) from National Capitol won Gold to round out the results.

The Brock Invitational

The final tournament for the first weekend of 2019 was the Brock Invitational held in St-Catherines Ontario.  Concordia and the Montreal YMHA were the lone Quebec clubs to participate at the tournament, sending athletes from both the varsity and club teams.  From Concordia University, Kaleigh Prieur (48 kg) and Amanda Savard (67 kg) both won Bronze medals in their respective divisions while Kaya Dubé-Snow (51 kg) and Sam Garland (72 kg) both won Silver medals.  Finally, Sam Barmish was Concordia's lone Gold medalist at 82 kg.  Wrestling for the Montreal YMHA, Gabriel Choueke placed 4th while Alexia Sherland (67 kg) took home a Silver medal and Jeremy Poirier (100 kg) beat 2018 Junior National Champion Richard Deschatelets Junior to win Gold for the tournament.
