The annual Matteo Pellicone tournament took place in Sassari City in Sardinia Italy.  The tournament is considered a tune-up for athletes competing on the international circuit after their respective continental championships.  This year a large group of athletes consisting from Quebec clubs such as the Montreal Wrestling Club, Concordia and Vanier College sent athletes to compete at the tournament in the Men and  Women's Junior categories.  With athletes coming from Canada, Hungary, Belgium, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Russia, the Czech Republic, Spain and of course Italy, the competition promised some strong competition and the matches did not disappoint.

A nice looking venue!

Fresh off their medal wins at the Junior Women's nationals, Virginie Gascon, Erin Rainville and Sophie Leboeuf looked to add to their medal count while Kaleigh Prieur hoped to win an international medal.  In the 55 kg division, Virginie Gascon (Concordia University) would put up a dominant performance against her final opponent from Italy to win by Technical Superiortiy (10-0) to win Gold while Kaleigh Prieur (Concordia University) would finish off with a Silver Medal at 50 kgs.  Finally, Erin Rainville (57 kgs, Vanier College) and Sophie Leboeuf (65 kgs, Concordia University) would finish off with Bronze Medals in their respective division.

Wrestling in the Junior Men division, Brayden Todd (61 kg Vanier College) would face some extremely tough competition from Kazakhstan in a Round Robin and finish off 4th while Julien Choquette (Vanier College) would win Gold at 92 kgs.  Thanks to their strong performances, Canada would finish off as the third best team in the tournament amongst the Junior Men.  This tournament was extremely tough and was a good competition for our Quebec Junior athletes.  On Friday, the Senior Women will take to the mat and Saturday, the Senior Men. Congratulations to our Juniors and best of luck to our Seniors!
