Two international competitions took place from July 9th to the 12th in which Quebec athletes were involved. The Junior Pan-American Championships which were held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and the Spanish Grand Prix, held in Madrid, Spain saw athletes from the Montreal Wrestling Club NTC take part in the competition. These are the results from the competitions:
U20 Junior Pan-American Championships
Cruz Lewis of the Montreal Wrestling Club NTC was Quebec’s lone representative at the event which would kick off the event on Thursday, July the 9th. Competing at the FS 61 kg category, Cruz’s first match would be in the Qualification Round against Alex Fernando Vega Tun of Guatemala. Cruz would put in a tough match, even leading at one point, but would eventually lose on points (8-6) and would not advance to the Repechage.

The Spanish Grand Prix
The competition would be begin on Saturday, July the 11th with the Women’s Wrestling. Jade Dufour (WW 50 kg) and Laurence Beauregard (WW 59 kg) would take to the mats on this day, while Frederique Choquette (FS 97 kg), would be competing the following day. Coach David Zilberman would accompany the athletes to the event.
A good start to the competition
Jade’s first match would be against Yi Hui Lin of Chinese Taipei. Jade would win that match by a comfortable margin, by Technical Superiority (10-0) and would face Amanda Tomczyk of Poland. Jade would also win this match in a dominant fashion by Pin (8-0) and move on to face a familiar opponent in the finals, Katie Ann Dutchak from the Saskatoon Wrestling Club. Jade would win that match via Injury Forfeit and come away with the Gold Medal.

For Laurence, her tournament would begin with a dominant win versus Bella Juarez Williams of the United States. Laurence would dominate her opponent, winning by Technical Superiority (10-0), where she would face Othelie Annette Hoeie of Norway. This match would prove to be more challenging, as Laurence would win a close match on Points (6-5), to move on to the Finals where she would face Olha Padoshyk of Poland. This match would be far easier as Laurence would win via Technical Superiority (11-0) and would also come away with a Gold Medal.
Laurence Beauregard
On the final day of competition, Frederique would begin his tournament with a match against Benjamin Greil of Austria. Frederique would win this match via Technical Superiority (11-0), where he would face Carlos Arturo Izquierdo Mendez of Columbia. Frederique would unfortunately lose this match by Technical Superiority (10-0) and would not move on to the Repechage.
A congratulations has to go out to all our athletes who competed this past weekend. It takes a tremendous amount of skill and commitment to qualify for these tournaments, and even more so to place at them.
