FLOQ’s Legendary Fight Club – July 2020
Garry Kallos
Garry Kallos began wrestling in his last year of Highschool. He continued his wrestling Career in Cegep with Brian Gill as his coach. Throughout his education in Cegep he trained with the Quebec Provincial team at Mission 76, a training program aimed to put Quebec wrestlers on the 1976 Montreal Olympic team and coach by Louis Kupcsik.
At Mission 76, Garry met Victor Zilberman, a Russian wrestler who passed through town, and practiced with the team at Mission 76. In 1975, Victor Zilberman was named the head coach at Lakehead University, and Garry followed him. At Lakehead University, Garry was a talented beginner amongst a dozen of National champions. Garry quickly developed his skills as a wrestler and became one of the best in Canada. In the summer of 76, Garry made the Olympic Greco-roman team, defeating the always fearsome, Doug Cox.
In 1978, Victor Zilberman was hired as a Wrestling Coach in Quebec, and Garry followed him again, and returned to Montreal. Garry continued his education and Varsity wrestling career at Concordia University from 1978-1984. Garry says that Victor Zilberman was “an amazing technician and tactician. Between rounds, Victor could point out adjustments I needed to make, or tell me my opponent’s vulnerabilities and offer solutions.” Garry continued to wrestle under Zilberman in Montreal and Qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games and the 1984 Olympic Games at 96kg.
To this day, Garry remains a strong supporter of the FLOQ, working closely with the Federation as its insurance broker.
